Jordan Murphy, starting power forward for the Gophers men’s basketball team, entered his junior season known to Big Ten hoops fans, but without much national recognition. That changed throughout the 2017-18 season, as the San Antonio native made noise by winning the season’s first three Big Ten Player of the Week awards. He’d eventually tally 17 consecutive double-doubles, tying a collegiate record future NBA superstar Tim Duncan set in 1996-97. Murphy’s ascendance, particularly in scoring and rebounding, also warranted his being named a midseason top 25 player of the year, despite not making the preseason top 50. Unfortunately, the Gophers nosedived around midseason, losing nine games in a row at one point, but Murphy kept on balling.
