Best Place for a Sunday Beer Run
Holy shit! They actually did it! After decades of half-assed debate and a few years of genuine public advocacy, Minnesota legislators voted to repeal the state’s long-outdated ban on Sunday liquor sales. When City Pages first dreamt up this category, we planned on scouting the best spot for an in-and-out transaction in Hudson, Wisconsin. But, starting July 1, you can just walk in anywhere in Minnesota! Well, almost: The law allows liquor stores to open, but doesn’t require them to, and some smaller shops have said they’ll stay closed. And Surdyk’s, the long-running Northeast store specializing in imported wines, must sit out the first two months of Sundays, after brazenly opening for a one-day Sunday sales blitz several months before the law was set to go into effect. But at least the law now allows for Minnesotans to have the Sunday Fundays we’ve long deserved.
